UFT Escalates Evaluation Fight With Bloomberg
As a day of joint legislative budget hearings on education nears its conclusion, the United Federation of Teachers announced a new television advertising campaign aimed at Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the ongoing fight over teacher evaluations.
The 30-second spot takes Bloomberg to task on his past missteps, including the hiring and then subsequent quitting, of Cathie Black as schools chancellor.
Here’s the script:
“Ten years as Mayor, and Mike Bloomberg still doesn’t get it.
Fudged education test scores, closing schools, parents shut out of the process.
And just last month, Bloomberg said in a perfect world he’d cut the number of teachers in half, doubling class size.
If you really want to do right by our kids, you’ll work with teachers and parents and stop playing politics with our schools.
Despite UFT’s opposition, Bloomberg as a powerful ally: Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Despite the frosty relationship, both the mayor and governor have joined forces on the issue of teacher evaluations.
