Cuomo, Bloomberg Take Gay Marriage Push National
…as promised, at least by the governor during his remarks at the Empire State Pride Agenda gala last month.
The Human Rights Campaign, which played a big role in Cuomo’s successful campaign to get gay marriage passed by the Legislature here in New York and has now launched a similar effort at the national level, released an undated letter signed by Cuomo, Mayor Bloomberg and 13 other mayors and governors that urged members of the US Senate Judiciary Committee to pass the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA), the bill to repeal DOMA.
The letter must have been sent before the Judiciary Committee voted along party lines, 8-10, last week to advance the RMA, because the HRC press release accompanying the letter credits it for moving the ball down the court.
“Leaders in states where marriage equality is the law of the land know firsthand that marriage strengthens families and builds stronger communities,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “Gov. Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg have been true leaders in the fight for equality in New York and across the country. The victory in the Senate Judiciary Committee came in large part because of their tireless efforts.”
