The Education ‘Reality Tour’
Here’s the video AQE, NYSUT and Citizen Action will be launching later this morning as part of their “Students First, The Reality Tour” – an effort intended as a counterweight to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s ongoing “People First” tour, which highlights the property tax cap the union and its allies insist will hurt school districts already reeling from this year’s budget cuts.
The video features parents, teachers and students rejecting Cuomo’s claim that the $1.3 billion axed from state education aid in the recently-passed budget would not cause widespread reductions in programs and teacher layoffs.
This comes as negotiations on the cap appear to be moving forward, with Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos suggestion for the first time that he is open to changes to Cuomo’s hard 2 percent cap – if and when the governor proposes any. It also comes two days after just over 93 percent of school district budgets – many of which included tax increases and layoffs – were approved by voters across the state.
