Civil Disobedience At Capitol
There’s a protest underway at the state Capitol staged by the same low-income and housing advocates who have been demonstrating against the pro-Cuomo Committee to Save NY.
Prior to this effort getting underway, we received a call informing us that more than 100 people planned to block the Capitol entrances today – with about a dozen or so aiming to get arrested.
At issue: The governor’s spending cuts and refusal to support extending the so-called millionaire’s tax as an alternate source of revenue.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver admitted Monday that a measure to prolong the millionaire’s tax would likely be DOA in the Senate and would definitely be vetoed by the governor if, by some miracle, it was passed by both houses of the Legislature.
Yesterday, Silver executed something of an about-face, saying he would introduce a budget bill that includes renewal of the temporary PIT on the wealthiest New Yorkers. The speaker met privately with the governor, and said he told Cuomo that the “overwhelming sentiment” of his conference is to renew the tax.
