The NY-25 recount is far from over, particularly in the eyes of Rep. Dan Maffei, whose campaign spokeswoman Abigail Gardner sent out a memo earlier today trying to convince reporters that the incumbent Democrat will emerge victorious once every last vote is counted.

In that memo, Gardner said officials will begin counting absentee ballots today in Cayuga County, followed by Monroe County on Nov. 12, Wayne County on Nov. 15, and finally, Onondaga County, where the congressman performed the best on election night, on Nov. 17.

But Maffei’s Republican opponent, Ann Marie Buerkle, who’s ahead by 687 votes, isn’t letting the recanvass cramp her style.

According to YNN’s Casey Bortnick, Buerkle will be attending an orientation for freshmen House members in Washington, D.C. next Monday.

The all-important office lottery is scheduled to take place Nov. 19 (next Friday). It’s unclear what’s going to happen with members like Buerkle whose races aren’t yet called, but it seems likely they’re not going to fare well in the real estate drawing.

Most House freshmen won’t be sworn in until January. One exception is another New Yorker, Republican Tom Reed, who already has the keys to his Capitol Hill office and will formally take the oath next Tuesday.

Reed ran simultaneously on Nov. 2 in a special election and the general election for the NY-29 seat vacated by former Democratic Rep. Eric Massa.

The strange situation came compliments of Gov. David Paterson, who called the special concurrent with the general, thereby enabling the winner to get a leg up over his fellow freshmen when it comes to seniority.
