Schumer Emerges (Updated)
Sen. Chuck Schumer, who has kept an unusually low profile throughout the 2010 campaign in spite of the fact that he’s running for re-election, is going to make a rare in-person appearance tomorrow on behalf of Democatic state Senate candidate Mike Kaplowitz.
Kaplowitz is running against Republican Assemblyman Greg Ball for the GOP-held 40th SD seat being vacated by Sen. Vincent Leibell.
Schumer is headlining a GOTV rally at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Bailey Park. (That just so happens to be in Somers, which is home to Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy, whom Ball defeated in the Sept. 14 primary).
The senior senator also released a statement today announcing his endorsement of Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer, calling her “a knowledgeable and determined advocate for New York, especially on issues of importance to Westchester such as education, flood control, and lowering burdensome property taxes.”
Oppenheimer is facing off against Republican Bob Cohen in the 37th SD.
UPDATE: I’m told by an aide to Sen. Diane Savino who is volunteering on Clarkstown Clerk David Carlucci’s campaign in the days leading up to the election that Schumer is scheduled to stop by the Democratic Senate hopeful’s HQ tomorrow to endorse him. The duo is then slated to do a little campaigning at a senior center.
Schumer is facing a challenge from Republican Jay Townsend who hails from the Hudson Valley (Croton-on-Hudson). The senior senator has a very wide double-digit lead in the polls, but I guess a little last-minute suburban campaigning never hurt anyone. The higher his numbers, the more powerful he’ll look if and when he goes for that Senate majority leader job…
