Joanie Mahoney, the Republican Onondaga County executive and first woman to hold that post, is the latest member of her party to announce support for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo, YNN’s Bill Carey reports.

The AG was in East Syracuse today to collect this latest “major” endorsement. She’s not the only Central NY Republican to back Cuomo. Former state Republican Party Chairman Patrick Barrett, a Fayetteville resident, has also endorsed the AG and is appearing in one of his campaign TV ads.

The county executive endorsed her fellow Republican, Rick Lazio, for governor back in May.

Mahoney, as you’ll recall, was mentioned as a potential lieutenant governor candidate – perhaps as a running mate for Rudy Giuliani, back when we still thought he might run for something this fall. At the time, Mahoney said she had no interest in the statewide post and was perfectly content with her current job.
