Bloomberg’s Mosque Message
Mayor Bloomberg, who has vocally supported the construction of a mosque proposed near Ground Zero, just updated his public schedule to include a noon event to address this morning’s Landmarks Preservation Commission vote that clear the way for the project to move forward.
Bloomberg will be joined by NYC Council Speaker Chris Quinn and unnamed “religious leaders” at the event, which is taking place on Governors Island (ownership of which was recently transferred from the state to the city).
The advisory includes the following description, just to drive the point home:
Governors Island is where the Dutch who founded New Amsterdam – the earliest religiously-tolerant colonial settlement in America – first lived. Please note that the Mayor, the Speaker, and the religious leaders will speak from Picnic Point on Governors Island with the Statue of Liberty in the background.”
