Upstate GOPers Call On Blakeman To Drop US Senate Bid (Updated)
Twelve upstate GOP county chairs and Assemblyman Joe Errigo are calling on former Long Island legislator Bruce Blakeman, the party’s designee to take on Democratic US Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, to quit the race due to his failure to fundraise.
The group, led by Wayne County GOP Chairman Dan Olson, an early supporterof Blakeman’s primary opponent, economist David Malpass, argues in a letter to Blakeman that Malpass is the “only candidate” who can bring a strong challenge to Gillibrand.
(They make no mention of the third contender, former Westchester Rep. Joe DioGuardi, who petitioned his way into the GOP primary and also is backed by the state Conservative Party).
The GOP leaders also invoke the name of Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, which is kind of ironic, since Blakeman frequently holds him up as proof that a little-known, under-funded Republican can win in an overwhelmingly blue state against a well-known and well-funded Democrat.
(Of course, Brown won an open seat, while Gillibrand is not only an incumbent, but has strong support of nearly the entire party establishment).
“Republicans and Independents are energized and looking for someone to send to Washington who will restore fiscal responsibility and fight government intrusion into our lives,” the GOP leaders wrote.
“In order to do that, we must defeat Kirsten Gillibrand. And based on your most recent campaign finance filing it is abundantly clear that the only candidate who can do that is David Malpass.”
(Snip).
“Time and again, you have put the best interest of our Party ahead of your personal ambition and we are asking you to do that once more. We must unite our party behind David’s candidacy today so that together we can bring fiscal sanity to Washington on behalf of all New Yorkers. We trust you will do the right thing.”
As of the end of June, Malpass has $2.3 million on hand, but that’s mostly because he loaned his campaign $2.5 million.
Blakeman, who was the first Republican to declare his candidacy against Gillibrand, has $236,247 on hand, and loaned himself $100,000 to keep his campaign afloat. DioGuardi has $843,445 on hand, and has kicked in $1 million to his campaign in contributions and loans.
UPDATE: Blakeman spokesman Chris Cianciulli scoffed at the idea that his candidate would be dropping out, noting he is “clearly the designee and the one who won the convention” in June, adding:
“These chairs make up less than 10 percent of the weighted vote…This race is not going to be decided by who has the biggest checkbook and putting $2.5 million of your own money into your campaign does not show statewide support.”
