Mejias Runs Against Albany Dysfunction
Former Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias, who decided to challenge GOP Sen. Kemp Hannon just one month ago, announced today he has raised $116,925 and has $112,921 cash on hand.
Mejias also released a campaign kick-off video, in which he denounces the dysfunction in Albany (much of which has occurred in the Senate chamber controlled by the very Democrats he hopes to join).
“I am grateful to all those who are supporting my campaign to clean up the most dysfunctional state government in America,” Mejias said in a press release.
“Iām especially proud of those grassroots supporters who have given what they could afford because they believe I am the best candidate to fix our broken government.”
Mejias lost his local seat in 2009 when his friend and ally, ex-Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi was also bounced from office and the Democrats lost control of the Legislature and all but one office (the DA’s spot held by AG hopeful Kathleen Rice).
He ran a failed challenge to Rep. Peter King in 2006 and was wooed by then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s team to take on Hannon in 2008, but ultimately decided against it. He had a little bit of a dust-up at the time with Nassau County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs (now also the state Democratic Party chairman), but the two appear to have patched up their differences.
In 2008, the Democrats ended up running Kristen McElroy, who had a closer-than-expected finish against Hannon, but didn’t manage to oust him.
