Fight Back NY, the political action committee formed solely to oust incumbent senators who voted “no” on gay marriage last Decemeber, sent out an appeal this morning seeking contributions to fund the hiring of “expert political researchers” to dig up dirt on Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr.

Fight Back, which has already helped oust expelled ex-Sen. Hiram Monserrate and is targeting another Democrat, Buffalo-area Sen. Bill Stachowski, calls the Diaz Sr. “New York’s most notoriously anti-gay senator.”

“Let’s be clear – this isn’t a typical Fight Back NY race,” states the e-mail, the subject line of which is “What’s in Ruben’s Closet?” (Get it?)

“Ruben Diaz has an annoying political survival instinct, but we want to set the record straight. Fight Back New York can play a unique role in this race by showing in a very public and powerful way that Ruben is not just bad for LGBT people, he’s bad for New York.”

“…Ruben has a murky past, but what exactly is he hiding? Here’s what we propose: Fight Back NY will hire expert political researchers to find every piece of information we can on Ruben Diaz. What he’s said, how he’s voted, what he’s done, and what he thought he got away with.”

“We’ll post everything online, so Diaz’s opponents, the media, and voters in his district will be able to use the facts against him in the primary.”

The pro-gay marriage movement is supporting Diaz Sr.’s primary challenger, Charlie Ramos, while the senator is being backed by Senate Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson (who, for the record, is also still in Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr.’s corner, too).

Ramos has had trouble fundraising so far, and he is also fighting to stay on the ballot after a challenge was filed to his petitions (presumably by a Diaz Sr. supporter).
