Savage for Senate (Updated)

I don’t see Sue Savage talking about how she will be dealing with the ethical questions that will arise from being married to Steve Weingarten of the gold-plated Albany lobbying firm of Weingarten, Reid & McNally. Considering all the public monies they brag about the state providing to their clients, how many budget bills will she be able to vote on without a conflict of interest?

It’s about time we had some new energy and ideas brought to bear in the State Senate. Here’s hoping we see lots more great candidates like this stepping up to challenge the long time incumbents!

The question in politics is often why. And the question here is: why is Sue Savage running this year? Logically, she should have run in the hyper-Democratic year of 2008. She might wait until 2012–when Farley might not be running.

But she’s running this year–in what looks to be a Republican year generally.

Why is her timing askew?

The answer has little to do with her. It has everything to do with re-apportionment and ultimately of ensuring that Nancy Pelosi remains Speaker of the House.

State Senate Democrats, with good reason, are worried about losing their precarious majority–of losing Foley’s, Johnson’s and Aubertine’s seats. Running hard against Hugh Farley represents an insurance policy of sorts for them. And if they retain control of the State Senate they will run roughshod over congressional reapportionment, perhaps affecting as many as six or eight seats–six or eight seats that might make the difference someday down the road in control of the House.

Accordingly, look for some Washington cash to find its way to Sue Savage’s campaign warchest, and look who was standing next to Sue Savage in Amsterdam today–Congressman Paul Tonko.

Tonko knows what’s at stake here. He likes being in the majority and means to stay there. No matter how high the national debt gets.
