Mommy Politics In AG’s Race
AG contender Sean Coffey sent out what appeared to be a routine Mother’s Day message to supporters yesterday that actually has some coded language designed to take a swipe at the lone woman among his primary opponents, Nassau County DA Kathleen Rice.
“In every region of New York, I have met extraordinary women who are struggling to find work, balance work and most of all, be good moms,” Coffey wrote in the e-missive.
“There is no more important job in the world than being a mother – and none more challenging, especially now. Keeping our children safe and healthy is every mom’s top priority, and will be mine as the next Attorney General.”
(Snip).
“I’m ready to deliver for working moms who are unfairly forced to choose between full-time work and caring for their children. They need support, not ultimatums. We need to find modern and innovative work plans that help both employers and employees. Parents are more productive at work when they know that their children are being cared for at home.”
(Snip).
“As the next Attorney General, I’m ready to deliver for your family as if it were my own.”
This is designed to highlight the fact that Rice, who is single and has no children, drew widespread criticism when she took office in 2006 for telling a dozen attorneys in her office who had been working part-time – mostly to care for their kids – to either come back full-time or not come back at all – a departure from the policy of the Republican man she had ousted.
The Times rebuked Rice, saying her “best and brightest should not have to fear making unpalatable choices when a baby comes along.”
