Gillibrand Aide To Challenge Espada?
A sharp-eyed reader wrote in to note the existence of a new campaign committee on the state Board of Elections Website, created by one Gustavo Rivera, who appears to be running in the 33rd SD.
The 33rd, in case you’re not aware, is currently represented by none other than Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr.
Rivera was hired by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand last May to serve as director of outreach in her New York City office. Here’s what the bio that accompanied the announcement about his hiring had to say:
“Gustavo was part of the team that helped the Democrats in the New York State Senate win the majority for the first time in decades, and has managed field and political operations for campaigns at the local, city and state levels.”
“In 2008, he worked with SEIU in Texas, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Puerto Rico in helping Senator Barack Obama secure the Democratic Party’s nomination in the Presidential election.”
“He subsequently served the Obama for America campaign in the general election as Constituency Director in Florida, where he helped deliver a victory that gave Barack Obama 27 Electoral College votes on his historic road to the Presidency.”
If Rivera throws his hat into the ring, the battle for the 33rd will be a three-way Democratic primary, as activist Desiree Pilgrim-Hunter has already announced her intention to challenge the scandal-scarred Bronx (Westchester?) senator.
