The data shows that charters are, in general, successful in reading,math and science indices.
And NYS should increase the cap on these public funded,privately run, schools.
The feds. would likely look favorably on this; and the state could really compete in the Race to the Top $700 million funding.
Charters do, however, tend to cherry pick.
There are too many applicants; and the cherry picking leaves the more difficult-to-learn students in the underachieving public schools.
I favor charters, and I say lift the ceiling on them.
The future of public schools are in limbo.
Many are failures, and should be closed.
In almost all states, the fiscal crisis is creating a crisis in the public school systems.
There will be major changes in our centralized,public school systems.
As my friend, writer, and social critic James Howard Kunstler suggests in The Long Emergency, all our central systems will unravel as we move into the end of oil period.
The oil heavey yellow school buses, for one, will no longer be viable.
Small schools, home schooling, are the future.

Actually, the data shows that twice as many charter schools fall behind public schools as leap ahead. And that’s not even taking into account that the kids who get into charter schools are far more likely to have the one biggest advantage going in — involved parents.

Meanwhile, the stated purpose of charter schools — to serve as mini-laboratories, experimenting with new education concepts and methods so that the successful new ideas can be incorporated into the public schools — has never been realized, anywhere. By their stated standard, charter schools have been a complete failure.

Of course charter schools are popular; motivated parents are so scared of public schools that they will reach out in desperation to anything that claims to be a better idea, no matter how empty that claim may be.

But what data support your conclusion that charters are a failure?
Montessori? These have a good reputation, methinks.
I assume some charters adopt Montessori philosophy.
Actually, being Earth Day, I support home schooling.
The suburban,centralized school districts will not survive the end-of-oil future. The ubiquitious yellow school bus will be an anarachism (sp).

Speaking of Earth Day, the Wrigley gum corporation announced that they will not longer wrap their gum in aluminum. Instead, it will paper.
Kudos to Wrigley.
