Mayor Bloomberg will headline a fundraiser for Assemblyman Sam Hoyt at the Harvard Club in Manhattan next month.

The invite to the May 12 event, which costs between $1,000 and $3,800 to attend, features a photo of the mayor and a note from him lauding the Buffalo Democrat as a “champion for charter schools in the Assembly,” (which is, for the record, a place where that sort of behavior is not widespread), and also an “outspoken advocate for public school reform.”

“Sam is a true leader in the fight to bring transformational change to New York’s educational system,” Bloomberg writes. “…He is always willing to challenge the status quo. Over the years I have served as mayor, Sam has become a trusted ally and a dear friend.”

“I need Sam to remain in the Assembly, and more importantly, the children of New York need Sam. He has my support, and I hope he will have yours.”

Hoyt carried legislation to raise the charter school cap, which supporters said would be crucial to the state’s “Race to the Top” application. As it turns out, they were right.

The assemblyman survived a primary challenge in 2008 that came in the wake of an embarrassing e-mail/extramarital affair scandal.

(Hoyt’s challenger was supported by Steve Pigeon and state Independence Party founder Tom Golisano, who briefly discussed cooperating with Bloomberg to remake the party. That effort seems to have died with the departure of ex-Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey and the Manhattan DA’s investigation of the John Haggerty/2009 election/Indy party mess. Golisano was also at odds with Bloomberg over the extension of term limits.)
